Joel Montero was born in Mexico. At first he studied conducting in Mexico City - until he had to pre-rig a piece from "Tosca" during his studies and canceled the singer, who was actually obliged to do so, at short notice. The result: When Montero spontaneously took over the vocals, his vocal talent was discovered by his professor. In 1999, the tenor moved to the Salzburg Mozarteum to continue his singing studies with Heiner Hopfner.
 
In 2001, Joel Montero won the Special Prize of the Montserrat Caballé Competition in Andorra and was awarded the Luigi Infantino Prize in Romania the following year at the tenor competition "Traian Grozavescu". From 2001 to 2008, he was a member of the ensemble at the Meiningen Theater and from 2010 to 2014 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. During this time he made his debut in over 20 important tenor roles in Italian, German and French as well as in operetta. His repertoire ranges from the title role in Verdi's "Otello" and Rodolfo in "La Bohème" to the helmsman in the "Flying Dutchman" to the title role in "Hoffmann's Tales", Don José in "Carmen" and Barinkay in the "Gypsy Baron".

In addition, the tenor is also in demand internationally and has performed at the Theater Principal Palma (Spain), Teatro Degollado (Mexico) as well as in Finland, Romania, Austria, Switzerland, Kazakhstan and at Opera Holland Park in London.

As part of his various party and guest engagements Joel Montero worked with directors such as Christine Mielitz, Roland Schwab, John Dew, Phillip Stölzl, Andrea Moses, Stefan Tilch, Ansgar Haag, Gottfried Pilz, Jens Pesel, Martin Lloyd-Evans, René Zisterer and well-known Conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Alan Buribayev, Constantin Trinks, José Maria Moreno, Johannes Wildner, Lukas Meister and Matteo Beltrami.

On the concert stage, the tenor most recently appeared as a soloist in Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra under the baton of José Maria Moreno at the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2017 he appeared in the Max-Littmann-Saal in Bad Kissingen and in 2018 the tenor celebrated his debut successfully at the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum KKL in Lucerne.

After managing the Quintana Roo Symphony Orchestra in Mexico since 2016, Joel Montero has also been in charge of the International MayaClassics Foundation since February 2018 and has been managing director of International MayaClassics GmbH since October 2018.

In 2019, Joel Montero made his role debut as Pinkerton in "Madame Butterfly" at the Theater Hof. In 2020 he will once again perform as a soloist at the Lucerne concerts in KKL.
